What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads have used by default since iOS 11. It is a variant of HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) that stores the picture with HEVC compression, which usually produces noticeably smaller files than JPG at similar visual quality. Some Android phones can save HEIC too.
The catch is compatibility. Many websites, forms, older programs and some versions of Windows cannot open HEIC, which is why people convert HEIC to JPG.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
- A website or online form rejects the upload because it only accepts JPG.
- The person you are sending photos to cannot open HEIC, whether by email, chat or a shared drive.
- Your editing software, print service or older computer does not support HEIC.
- You want one format that works on every device.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- Choose your files. Press Choose HEIC Files or drop photos onto the converter at the top of this page.
- Convert. Adjust the JPG quality if you want, then press Convert to JPG. Your browser does the work.
- Download. Save each JPG, or download several at once as a ZIP.
HEIC vs JPG
| HEIC | JPG | |
|---|---|---|
| File size at similar quality | Usually smaller | Usually larger |
| Opens everywhere | No: needs recent OS or software | Yes: every device and website |
| Color depth | More than 8-bit supported | 8-bit |
| Transparency | Supported | Not supported |
| Several images in one file | Yes (bursts, Live Photo parts) | No |
| Best for | Storing photos on a phone | Sharing, uploading, printing |
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
A little, in principle. JPG is lossy, so every conversion re-encodes the photo. At 85% or higher the difference is rarely visible, and 100% is still not a bit-for-bit copy. Keep your original HEIC if you may edit the photo heavily later.
Three things worth knowing:
- File size. Because HEIC is more efficient, the JPG is often larger than the HEIC. A lower quality setting makes it smaller.
- Color. Photos are converted to standard sRGB color. Wide-gamut photos can look very slightly less vivid.
- Metadata. Location, camera details and date taken are not carried into the JPG.
Is this HEIC to JPG converter private?
Your photos are converted in your browser. The page downloads a small decoder (a WebAssembly program), and from then on your files are read, decoded and re-encoded on your own device. They are not sent to our servers, because no server is involved in the conversion.
You do not have to take our word for it: open your browser’s developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert a photo. You will see the site’s own files load and no upload of your images. Read the privacy policy for the full details.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files?
Yes. Select many files at once, or drop several photos onto the converter. They are converted one at a time, which keeps memory use low on phones and laptops, and you can download everything as one ZIP. Each file shows its own status, so one bad file never blocks the rest.
HEIC to JPG on Windows
The quickest way is this page. To do it without a website: install HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (some PCs also need HEVC Video Extensions), open the photo in the Photos app or Paint, then choose Save as and pick JPEG. Requirements vary by Windows version.
HEIC to JPG on Mac
Open the photo in Preview, choose File → Export, and set the format to JPEG. To do several at once, select them in Preview’s sidebar and use File → Export Selected Images. On macOS Monterey and later you can also right-click files in Finder and use Quick Actions → Convert Image.
HEIC to JPG on iPhone
This converter works in Safari on iPhone, and the JPGs are saved through Safari’s normal download flow (you will find them in the Downloads folder in the Files app). To stop creating HEIC photos going forward, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. If you copy photos to a PC with a cable, Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic converts them to a compatible format during transfer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert HEIC to JPG?
Choose your HEIC files (or drag them onto the page), press Convert to JPG, then download the results. Several files can be converted at once and downloaded as one ZIP.
Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no per-file fee.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion happens inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly, so your photos are not sent to a server. You can confirm this by watching the Network tab in your browser’s developer tools while you convert.
Do I need an account?
No. Open the page, convert, download.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drop as many as you like (up to 200 per batch). They are converted one after another so your device’s memory is not overloaded, then you can download a ZIP.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce image quality?
Slightly, in theory: JPG is a lossy format, so the photo is re-encoded. At the default 85% or higher, the difference is rarely visible. Only the pixels are kept; see the next question for what is not.
Is photo metadata, like location, kept?
No. The converted JPG does not carry over EXIF data such as GPS location or the date taken. That protects your privacy when sharing, but it also means those details are gone from the JPG. Keep your original HEIC if you need them.
Why is my JPG larger than the original HEIC?
HEIC compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, so a JPG of similar visual quality is often larger. Lower the quality setting if you need a smaller file.
Can I convert HEIF files?
Yes. HEIC is the most common kind of HEIF file, and this tool accepts .heic and .heif files. Unusual HEIF variants may not be supported, and you will see a clear message if one fails.
Does it work on iPhone, Windows and Mac?
It runs in any modern browser, including Safari on iPhone, Chrome on Android, and Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows and Mac. Very large photos can exceed what a phone browser can handle.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 200 MB are accepted. In practice the limit is your device’s memory: very high-resolution photos (tens of megapixels) may be refused on phones, and you will be told if so.
